I recently made a few changes, all of which were challenging to my daily routine. Some have been easier than others. One of those was giving up added salt. Suffice it to say that I salted everything I ate…even apples! Yeah, it was becoming an addiction.
Typically we make big changes when we hit some kind of ‘bottom’. Whether that is with our health, self-esteem, relationships… In this case I was having some health issues which led to researching salt. I realized that at the pace I was going, it can actually damage my kidneys. Thus the change. Here is how I’ve been able to put the salt shakers away. But this works for anything you choose to do. Adding exercise or modifying your workout. A regimen to lose weight. Focusing on cleaning your house. Creating stronger relationships. You get the idea.
5 things that will help you create a new change:
1. Embrace it – remind yourself why you want to make the change. Maybe notecards or a daily affirmation. Be ‘all in’!
2. Don’t overthink it – if you do you will talk yourself out of it. Like the commercial says ‘just do it’. Don’t wait for Monday. Or more money. Or an event. Just start.
3. Look for the good, not the bad – the change was surely for a good reason, so find the good. I’m losing weight. I’m healthier. I’m happier. There is more money in my account. I accomplished something hard!
4. Create accountability – get a friend or family member to ask you how you are doing, or make the change with you.
5. Celebrate success – life happens one day at a time, so tell yourself you did good every day that you are successful in your change. If you miss a day, just get back on track.
